Factoid #17: Killer Applications

Factoid #17:

The integrated circuit is used in nearly all electronic equipment. This single killer application generated the enormous semiconductor industry.

Among emerging technologies, nanotechnology has an increasing number of killer applications. Each may generate its own enormous industry. These applications include carbon nanotubes, graphene, nanoshells, quantum dots, and nanosilver–just to name a handful. Many high-paying jobs of the future will be found in their industries.

  1. So true! Which is why I do everything I can to encourage my high school daughter’s interest in chemistry.

    • Hi Jennette, Your daughter’s interest in chemistry is wonderful, and you’re so great to encourage it. Very cool! Cheers, Ashley

  2. Too bad my strengths don’t lie within that line of science. Oh well. : )
    Thanks for the info.

    • You’re welcome, Donna. Nanotechnology cuts across physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, materials science, and the engineering fields. Every aspect of our lives has one or more nanotech applications, even unexpected places such as forestry. Don’t count yourself out.
Many forecasters are predicting a shortage of US scientists and engineers is coming, soon. This is especially true for women. What the technical community needs badly are high-tech role models–fictional characters in novels, movies, and TV programs–as well as mothers, fathers, and caring adults encouraging the next generation to explore high-tech fields as possible careers. Cheers, Ashley
