Factoid #18: Metric System Prefixes

Factoid #18:

The metric system offers some great prefixes for generating new words.

Peta – 1,000,000,000,000,000 – quadrillion

Tera – 1,000,000,000,000 – trillion

Giga – 1,000,000,000 – billion

Mega – 1,000,000 – million

Kilo – 1,000 – thousand

Hecto – 100 – hundred

Deka – 10 – ten

Deci – 0.1 – tenth

Centi – 0.01 – hundredth

Milli – 0.001 – thousandth

Micro – 0.000,001 – millionth

Nano – 0.000,000,001 – billionth – atomic and small molecular scale

Pico – 0.000,000,000,001 – trillionth – subatomic scale

Femto – 0.000,000,000,000,001 – quadrillionth

New word:  Picoblog – This blog is too small to be called either a microblog or a nanoblog.

  1. Thanks Ashley. I learned something new today. I remember teachers trying to cram the metric system on us when I was a kid. Barely any of it stuck!
