Rescue Word of the Week #19 – 2013: Self-reliance

The rescue word of the week is self-reliance.

Please help save this word from the endangered-word list by adopting it and using it in your thoughts, your speech, your writing, and your deeds.

What does this word mean to you?

My two cents (but please share yours):

Self-reliance is the core of a pioneering spirit. Each of us is on a long journey and needs an abundance of this quality in our character in order to live well.

  1. I’m afraid we’re too late for self-reliance or pioneering spirit either one. They’ve been replaced by “entitlement” and “I have the right” and just plain “gimme.” Sad.

    • It’s never too late, David. Whenever we run into a bad patch, we need to gather in our faith and trust like little children. Cheers, Ashley

  2. One of my favorite trait words:: self-reliance. People can speak it, but this is one that must be taught to be actualized. I agree that it is important to keep this one alive. Teaching others that they can do it, on their own, and helping them build self-worth, self-confidence, and self-love will always be important. I disagree with David, it is never too late, but sometimes we all do too little in helping others find that place in themselves. Keep teaching people to fish, Ashley. Thanks – Lorian

    • Thank you so much, Lorian. I love sharing as I learn. Cheers, Ashley
