Question of the Week #51 – 2013: Culture

What is your favorite Thanksgiving dinner side dish?

My two cents (but please share yours):

It’s a tie between green bean casserole with dry sherry mixed into the mushroom soup and tons-of-mushrooms stuffing casserole.

  1. I’m a vegetarian so I like the green bean casserole and the fluffy rolls with butter in the middle.

    • Classic choices, Patti. By the way, the tons-of-mushrooms casserole is also vegetarian–just broth, lots of sliced precooked mushrooms, sage-and-onion bread stuffing (preferably homemade), butter, celery, and a little yogurt or sour cream to add a creamy texture. Adding in grated parmesan or Swiss cheese for extra creaminess is optional. Cheers, Ashley

      • Thanks for the helpful recipe, Ashley. I’ll have to try it. For some reason I thought you lived outside the U.S. Hmmmm where did I get that from?

      • You’re so welcome, Patti. Several lovely folks from outside the U.S. have commented on this picoblog. Also, I lived for one year in Montreal, Canada and another year in Reading, England and may have mentioned it. Either or both may be why. I was born and raised in Delaware and have lived in Texas with my husband for over twenty years, half in Austin, half just north of Dallas. Cheers, Ashley

  2. Garlic mashed potatoes with turkey gravy…slobbering now. 🙂

  3. Pecan pie . . . Is that a side dish? 🙂

    • Hey, it’s too good not to work, Piper. Cheers, Ashley

  4. None. I don’t care for turkey or the stuff that goes with it. Rather cook a roast or some such thing.

    • Roasts have great side dishes, too, David. Scalloped potatoes perhaps? Yorkshire pudding? 🙂 Cheers, Ashley

  5. I liked turkey dipped in applesauce.

    • Hmm. That sounds really good, Gerri. Have to give it a try. Cheers, Ashley
