Question of the Week #60 – 2013: Culture

Question of the Week #60 – 2013: Culture

In the Republican Party, are libertarians the same as conservatives?

My two cents (but please share yours):

No. Libertarians are high-freedom centrists. They want fewer personal (social) regulations like the liberals and fewer economic regulations like the conservatives. In other words, libertarians want all regulations kept to a minimum, but they fully support the US Constitution.

Nolan chart model: (2-Dimensional Definition Model)

Libertarians:  fewer personal regulations + fewer economic regulations

Liberals:  fewer personal regulations + more economic regulations

Conservatives:  more personal regulations + fewer economic regulations

Centrists:  moderate personal regulations + moderate economic regulations

Totalitarians:  more personal regulations + more economic regulations

  1. Your own answer was eloquently stated. I have nothing to add.

    • Thank you so much, David. I hope the chart definitions are as helpful to others as they are to me. Cheers, Ashley
