Question of the Week #19 – 2014

Question of the Week #19 – 2014

What is the official number of unemployed individuals, and what is the actual number?

My two cents (but please share yours):

When I checked the debt clock, I found the official number listed as 10,380,510. The actual number of unemployed was 19,394,953. Why are these numbers different?

  1. 19+ million people unemployed out of 316+ million is a LOT.

    • It is a huge problem, Patti. A lot of people are hurting. – Ashley

  2. Good question.

    • Hi Gerri, I believe the difference is because the official number ignores all of the unemployed folks who have giving up looking for a job. Cheers, Ashley

  3. I don’t know the answer, but I do know that the more we keep extending unemployment benefits the more people will be unemployed. I was unemployed several times during my career, but I never drew a penny of unemployment. I never figured the American taxpayers owed me a living.

    • That’s a very good way to handle it, David. Cheers, Ashley
