Picoblog Question – 2015 – Post #76

How do you negotiate for something you really, really want?

My two cents, but please share yours:

Set your opening bid far beyond what you want. Make it absolutely outlandish. You want your opponent to counter with a bid designed to pull you back to a “reasonable position,” namely, to what you really wanted in the first place.

    • Absolutely, D. Wallace! It works in politics, too. The secret is carefully judging how far you can go without the other party walking away from the table. Cheers, Ashley

      • Ah, I was thinking of it in the reverse…that if I really wanted to buy a particular house, I would offer a million bucks and the owner would say, “oh, no, fifty thou will be more than enough.”
