Techie Corner – 2017 – Post #3 – Mass Customization

What near-future technologies will enable and drive mass customization?

My two cents, but please share yours:

Mass customization will be enabled primarily by 3-D printing and customization software. Both of these technologies have arrived and are growing rapidly.

  1. Many engineers currently predict homes will have at least one 3-D printer in them (similar to the way 2-D printers are linked to computers) by 2025. An individual can go online, select and purchase a product recipe that meets their personal specifications, and download this recipe to their computer or laptop. Then the individual can select Print, and the 3-D printer will manufacture in the home whatever the individual wants when they want it.
  2. An increasing number of smart appliances, houses, and cars now have software that tries to learn as much about the individual owner as possible in order to customize their settings and conditions and schedules. Again, the individual gets what they want when they want it.

Will this mass customization, this rise in the importance of the individual’s economic needs, lead to a trend toward social individualism? Maybe. Only time will tell.
