The Abundance Frontier – 2017 – Post #2

How do we make drinkable water abundant?

My two cents, but please share yours:

There’s more than enough water in our oceans. The challenges are making it drinkable and directing it to the people where and when they need it. For both tasks, the necessary technologies exist.

For making water drinkable, the current methods are nanofiltration, desalination, and distillation. These methods have already been scaled up to handle the needs of a few small countries. But energy consumption is high. To continue scaling up to meet the fresh-water needs for the entire planet, the energy supply must be increased accordingly, driving the energy costs closer to zero.

For directing water to the people, the problem is not technology. Pipes exist. The biggest impediment to creating a suitable plumbing system is war, a problem humans can fix, if they wish to.

  1. Water is going to be a big factor in upcoming strife in Africa and India/Pakistan. But I will say you forgot the most obvious answer: Reclaiming, conserving, and managing the water supplies we do have.

    • Hi Linda, That will certainly be a helpful factor, but we do need to access the oceans in order to achieve abundance. Cheers, Ashley
