The Abundance Frontier – 2018 – Post #4

How do we make food abundant?

My two cents, but please share yours:

Now that AI/robotics/automation and populism have arrived, what will be the next revolution? The next revolution may in fact be the Abundance Frontier, and it promises to be a near-future-technology Wild West, pioneer spirit included.

The challenge will be to make each of the economic necessities of life so abundant they become virtually free. Here’s a starter list for these necessities.

  • Air
  • Water
  • Food
  • Shelter
  • Clothing
  • Transportation
  • Self-protection
  • Energy
  • Healthcare
  • Life experiences

Two near-future technologies that will contribute to making food abundant globally are vertical farming and 3-D printing. Both exist today, and both will soon be ready for volume manufacturing.

Vertical farming is literally just that–planting vertically. It’s a perfect fit for urban areas, plus it’s always practical to have the food supply near the consumers.

3-D printing, also called additive manufacturing, has been around since the early 1980s, and 3-D printing food is a rapidly growing application set that now includes many favorites from steaks (cow friendly) to chocolate to pizza. The technology is still quite pricey, but home desktop printers are in development and soon will be affordable.
