Techie Corner – 2019 – Post #5 – Space Fountain

What is a space fountain?

My two cents, but please share yours:

A space fountain is a type of space elevator (an elevator used to get space vehicles, and other payloads, into orbit without a rocket) that doesn’t need to be in geosynchronous orbit. This very high tower can’t support its own weight. So, a stream of enormous “pellets” is shot up, makes a U-turn, and comes back down, managing in the process to keep the tower upright.

  1. A space fountain sounds exceptionally cool, technically. I recall there was an Arthur C. Clarke novel, ‘The Fountains of Paradise’, about a space elevator, but not a space fountain. (He put a similar elevator into the last of his 2001 series too.)

    • I’ll have to check out that novel, Matthew! 🙂 Cheers, Ashley
