Foodie Corner – 2021 – Post #2 – Basic Cheese Balls

How do you make a cheese ball for the holidays, or anytime you like?

My two cents, but please share yours:

  • 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened (room temperature)
  • 1c shredded cheese (Cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, etc.)
  • 1/2c bacon bits (can partially/fully substitute dried fruit bits, such as cranberries, figs, or pineapple, or substitute chopped nuts or diced celery, etc.)
  • 1T Worcestershire sauce (or hot sauce to taste)
  • 2-3T herbs (i.e. ground rosemary or ground sage, etc.), spices (i.e. onion powder or ground cumin, ground coriander, and dried oregano, if going for a Tex-Mex flare), seasonings (i.e. ranch dressing powder or a little salsa)
  • 1c finely chopped pecans (or chopped herbs such as parsley or cilantro)

Thoroughly mix all of the above ingredients, except for the chopped pecans that will cover the outside. Taste for the right flavor balance per your preferences.

Form the cheese mix into a firm, round ball. Spread the chopped pecans out in a large, shallow bowl. Roll the cheese ball, pressing slightly, until the whole ball is covered. Serve with crackers, chips, or veggies.

Play with this recipe, especially with the herbs and spices, and make it your own. Enjoy.
