Writer’s Corner – 2019 – Post #1

Should writers sell their stories at discounted prices or for free?

My two cents, but please share yours:

My concern with discounting is it can damage the industry when so many books are available, priced below the raw costs of writing and publishing. If writers can’t make a profitable living, they’ll be forced out of business. What are your thoughts on this topic?

  1. It’s a really tough choice and there’s no great answer. Writers need readers; there’s no way around it. But attracting readers is super hard without connections or a way to entice them. The hope is that discounts and freebies will create a following that will purchase books in the future. But I agree that the value of books as a whole goes down, which isn’t good for anyone trying to make a living. Very few writers make enough to survive on book sales alone.

  2. Reduced prices have never brought in sales for me. Mine are all pretty much rock-bottom anyhow.

    • Perhaps it’s time to raise your prices, David. Your stories are valuable. Cheers, Ashley
